Pelican is a large water bird with a pouch under the bill. They are found on all continents except Antarctica. This genus has 8 different species in the world. Pelicans can grow to a wingspan of 3 meters and weigh 13 kgs.

ペリカンは、嘴ｸﾁﾊﾞｼ（のど）に特殊な袋を持つ水鳥。南極大陸以外の全ての大陸に棲息し、世界に８種類が知られてます。大きいものでは、翼幅３メートルにもなり、体重は１３キロ。

Pelicans are gregarious. Pairs are monogamous for a single season. A pair is together only at the nesting area, away from the nest mates are independent.

群れで生活し、番ﾂｶﾞｲは一雌一雄制。カップルは巣を離れるとそれぞれ単独で行動。

Australian Pelican is widespread on the inland and coastal waters of Australia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, western Indonesia and as a vagrant to New Zealand. They are medium-sized by pelican standards, 1.7 mtrs long with a wingspan of 2.4 mtrs and weighing 4~7 kgs. During mating season, the color of the pouch changes dramatically into bright salmon pink.

オーストラリアン・ペリカンは、オーストラリア・ニューギニア・フィジー・インドネシアの一部の内陸や海岸部に広く棲息。稀にニュージーランドでも確認されてるそうです。ペリカンの仲間の中では中間サイズで、体長１．７メートル、翼幅２．４メートル、体重４〜７キロほど。繁殖期になると、袋の色は劇的に変わり、綺麗なサーモンピンクになるそうです。

Feed mainly on fish. They also eat a variety of aquatic animals such as crustaceans, tadpoles and turtles. When they are starved, they eat even seagulls and ducklings. The very sensitive bill helps locate fishes in murky water. And probably the hook at the end of the upper mandible is to grip slippery food items. The pouch is not for food storage, but it's used as a net when hunting fishes. Once something is caught when they plunge their bills into the water, they draw the pouch to their breast to empty the water. Then they manipulate the prey into its head pointing down the pelican's throat. Occasionally they collect and drink the rainwater by opening their bill. The pouch hangs from the two thin and weakly articulated bones attatched to the lower jaw.

魚が主食で、他に甲殻類・お玉ジャクシ・亀なども食べます。餌の少ない時期などは、カモメやカモ等も食べます。とても敏感にできてる嘴は、汚れた水の中でも魚の居場所を特定するのに役立ちます。又、上嘴の先についた鈎状のものは、恐らく捕らえた魚等が滑り落ちるのを防ぐのに役立っているのでしょう。嘴の袋は、餌を貯め込んでおく餌袋ではなく、ペリカン達は袋を魚を捕らえる際にネットとして使い、魚を捕らえると嘴を胸に押しつけて中に入った水を押し出し、魚の頭がペリカンのノドの方へ向くように上手に嘴の中で転がして食べます。又、時には口を大きく空けて、雨水を袋で受けて溜まった水を飲んだりもします。下顎にある２本の薄弱な関節ある骨から、袋はぶらさがってて、袋の容量はなんと１３リットルもあるんだって。

Good at flying for a long distance covering hundreds of kilometers, remaining in the air for 24 hrs. The excellent soarer, Pelicans, use thermals to rise altitudes. Commonly fly at 1,000 meters (maximun record of 3,000 meters) high reaching air speeds of up to 56km/hour. The extremely light skeleton which weigh less than 10% of their total body weight make it possible.

大きな体の割に長距離飛行が得意で、最高で２４時間位の飛行（飛行距離数百キロ）が可能。飛翔高度を上げるのに、暖気を利用するという優れ者。平均的には高度約１，０００メートル上空（最高観察記録３，０００メートル）を、時速約５６キロで飛びます。骨の重さが占める割合は、全体重のたったの１０％。
